He has been researching at the Department of Biology, University Abdelmalek Essaadi of Tetouan (Morocco) since 1991. His first projects were on the bio-demographics and dynamics of crustacean populations along the Mediterranean coast of Morocco. In 2003, he joined the International IUCN-Marine Turtle Specialist Group. He collaborates with the NOAA sea turtle project in Morocco with interests focused on sea turtle ecology and conservation. His projects and research address various issues ranging from the impact of fisheries on sea turtle populations, feeding ecology, and strandings. He supervises Master’s and Ph.D. students on sea turtles and fisheries and related topics at Tetouan University. Dr. Aksissou has organized training workshops for fishers in different Atlantic and Mediterranean Moroccan ports (Tangier, Casablanca, Agadir, Laayoune) since 2005.
