Robert van Gorcom graduated in Molecular Sciences at Wageningen University (1981) and got a PhD in Molecular Genetics at the University of Amsterdam (1997) on the analysis of gene expression in filamentous fungi.
Robert van Gorcom worked for 20 years at the Dutch Organization of Applied Scientific Research TNO as project leader and department manager on microbial and plant biotechnology. In 2000 he became managing director of the glasshouse horticulture research stations of Wageningen University & Research and in 2002 he joined Wageningen UR’s food safety research institute RIKILT as BU manager. He was appointed as general director of RIKILT on 1-1-2010. RIKILT merged on June 1st, 2019 with the Food Safety Laboratory of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). Robert was appointed as general director of this new institute called Wageningen Food Safety Research. He is member of the Board of Directors of Wageningen University & Research and coordinator of all statutory tasks @WUR (75 M€ program). He is and has been member of several management & advisory boards of professional organizations in his domain.
Wageningen Food Safety Research is the official control laboratory of the Netherlands supporting the national food safety authority. Furthermore we are the major National Reference Laboratory (all (bio)chemical tasks and foodborne viruses), EU Reference Laboratory (mycotoxins & plant toxins and animal growth promotors) and research institute within Wageningen University & Research with 3 professors and ~20 PhD students. The institute has about 380 employees and is located on Wageningen Campus.
